The Earth is under siege - threats to fragile ecosystems are everywhere. We are currently losing approximately 137 species of plants and animals every single day! We have managed to speed up the natural extinction rate by about 1,000 percent! It is time to heal the Earth - and we need your help!
Planet Rehab has three main goals:
As we see it, the world has two main filters: 1) the rainforests, & 2) the oceans. Well, we are destroying both of our filters with alarming speed. Rainforests are being cut down - mankind destroys over 32 million acres of rainforest every year.
Sadly, one of the most common ways of killing rainforests is through "controlled burns." Every day in the Amazon there are approximately 600 fires! So we are not only destroying one of our planet's primary filters, we are producing more carbon that needs to be filtered! And why are the rainforests being destroyed? The principal reasons are to grow soy, to feed cattle, to produce hamburgers/steaks, etc.
Our other filter, the world's oceans, are possibly worse off than the rainforests. There are now five areas in the world's oceans - called gyres - that are filling up with trash, specifically plastic! One of the largest of these "plastic patches" is approximately 1,000 miles off the coast of California. The latest estimates of the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch suggest that it is 1.5 times the size of the continental United States! According to the Scripps Research Institute, the South Pacific Garbage Patch may be even bigger!
Plastic is made from oil and it never goes away! As the plastic travels the currents to the gyres, they may break down into small pieces - and each piece of plastic acts as a sponge grabbing DDT, PCBs, oily toxins, etc. By the time the pieces of plastic arrive at the gyres, they may have up to one million times the toxicity as surrounding areas. There are now six times more plastic particles in the North Pacific Gyre than plankton! And plankton are the source of the majority of our oxygen! Plankton are also the basic building block of the ocean - and the most basic food. Plankton are being replaced by plastic! All levels of sea creatures are now feeding on plastics. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, approximately eight million pieces of litter enter the world's oceans every day - and up to 90 percent of the litter is plastic! Every year over one million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die because of plastic!
We are plugging up and turning off the world's filters - and your help is needed to change this. Join with us as we help to heal the Earth - our home!
